Abbey
Started in 1849 as the National Freehold Land and Building Society, it became known as Abbey National in 1944 before converting to plc status and floating on the London Stock Exchange in 1989. Abbey was acquired by the Spanish financial group Banco Santander in 2004. Abbey also runs Cahoot, the online bank.
